Dr. Kristann Heinz, MD, RD, is a family medicine doctor who practices functional and integrative medicine at Red Hill Medical + Wellness located in Pennsylvania. She believes that good health and wellness are based on a strong foundation of nutrition, physical movement, and emotional health. She partners with her patients to understand their personal health stories so that together they can devise a plan and health strategy based on in-depth testing and interpretation. Dr. Heinz received her B.S. in Nutrition Science at Simmons College and later a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Heinz completed her Family Medicine residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network and has been working in the outpatient integrative medicine field for over 15 years. 

The Challenge

Dr. Heinz started her own private practice with an emphasis on functional and integrative medicine in 2015. The practice needed a new EHR solution that was easy to use and could meet the needs of this cash-based specialty practice which has had up to 2 staff nurses, an office manager, and an educational management specialist. Dr. Heinz specializes in general wellness, hormone health and complex chronic illness (such as mold illness, lyme, tick borne illness, and the “mystery illnesses”).

“I was using PowerToPractice when I initially opened my practice, but quickly found that it had limitations and did not have integrated billing features.” explains Dr. Heinz. “I could not easily navigate through the EHR during an office visit and had to put in place a separate billing function which was adding additional administrative burdens and time. I also found it difficult to collaborate with other staff members to best support patients. Because I provide so much education for my patients, I needed an EHR that could give patient instructions, handouts and share video links via a patient portal. I wanted an EHR which could integrate everything we do in a traditional family medicine practice that has a focus on integrated medicine. So I was looking for an EHR that could reflect that scope of practice. For example, I needed to often prescribe medications, add in supplement support, order a nutritional IV and provide nutritional education (handouts/videos).

Onboarding patients needed to be easy for them to navigate as well. CERBO has the patient portal with onboarding medical documents from HIPPA to various medical histories. They also can add in documents specific to the practice, which has been very helpful as many of us have niche practices. Communication through the portal with patients is a feature that both the providers and the patients use daily, requests for appointments are seamless through the portal and patients are happy with this experience. After evaluating Cerbo, I realized it could meet these needs”.

The Solution

The key features in Cerbo that stood out for Dr. Heinz included the ability to create nutritional supplement charts, develop encounter summaries with elaborate patient plans, order labs, medications, customized compounded medications, custom forms and educational programs interfaced through the patient portal. The portal is integrated into her website platform which makes it easy for patients. “The patient portal has a feature which allows you to organize tasks with other people on your team so you don’t miss things and can create “to-do” lists which address patient needs.” says Dr. Heinz. “The portal is friendly and intuitive. Patients love the portal. I also have appreciated how accommodating the Cerbo support team has been over the years by addressing my wish list and concerns. They even put a jumping bird next to new patient forms so patients could see them more easily!”

The Results

“The feedback from patients has been very positive” confirms Dr. Heinz. “Patients can message me, schedule appointments online, and view encounter reports all in the patient portal.
